Roundtable Discussion #2

TV rules, Real Rules, Kid Rules, what the #$@!?

This roundtable discussion consists of AiPlaya, 2xhelix, and Cyberslayer.

2xhelix: we all know everyone loves to play Yu-Gi-Oh!, but really how many people know the real rules of the game? We all watch the TV show and say to ourselves, is that really possible? Kids on the playground don't know how to play, the just throw cards on the ground and say I win. So let's see what the other members of g1m have to say about this.
AiPlaYa: Well, for me, I would have to say that the TV rules really hurt the game in general. People are given the illusion that you can play the Blue Eyes White dragon without tributes. In fact, many kids don't understand the concept of tributes! Not only that, the game only has each player at 2000 life points. Any real duelist knows that 2000 can disappear so fast.
Cyberslayer: So what? It's only a show and people watch it for entertainment. The only thing I hate about the show is how every time the good guys always get the right cards at exactly the right time.
AiPlaYa: that's heart of the cards! I would say I have that power as well.
2xhelix: Hold on guys, we can discuss heart of the cards next time, for now let's talk about the rules of the game ok?
AiPlaya: anyway, as I was saying, most kids who watch the show don't have a good grasp of how deep and intricate the rules are for a duel.
CyberSlayer: Well a normal duel can take over 20 minutes long, I rather watch a show that has some story line.
AiPlaya: well, at least they can follow the rules a bit more closely, remember the episode where YuGi plays the Stone Soilder to destroy the moon. Common, that's really doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
CyberSlayer: Ha, I guess you didn't pay attention to the show, remember they said that on the Island, they would be playing with some "new rules?"
AiPlaya: Yeah I heard that part, but it was only Field Power Bonuses. That I don't mind in itself, because we can currently play field cards.
2xhelix: Well, I see that we are agreeing that the TV rules are somewhat modified for viewing purposes, but what about kids that play without the real rules? Have you encountered any?
AiPlaya: For one thing, I know that quite a number of youngsters have acquired Japanese cards. They don't know the exact effect of them, so they make it up.
CyberSlayer: Well, if both players agree on the effect, I don't see a problem there. The attack power and defense are numbers, so there will be no confusion on that side of things.
AiPlaya: But I think it ruins the game, because people do not know what the designers had in mind when they created the game in the first place. Also, I just can't stand little kids with no concept of the rules!! Arggg
Cyberslayer: As long as they are having fun, I don't see a problem. Besides, the little kids are the ones that buy more cards; we should just let them play in their own little world. Tournaments are where the professionals with the real skills play.
AiPlaya: As long as kids don't start to play in the tournaments I'll be happy.
2xhelix: AiPlaya, I think you're generalizing when you say kids. I know a lot of younger duelist that know the rules inside and out. You would be surprised at how smart the young people are these days.
AiPlaya: Well, let me restate what I've been trying to say today "READ THE RULES"
CyberSlayer: I will say this "HAVE FUN PLAYING THE GAME"
2xhelix: Well, there you have it. In general, YuGiOh! Is a great game to play and have fun. I think Cyberslayer is right when he says everyone should enjoy this great game. At the same time AiPlaya has a good point, you need to understand the rules. Understanding the rules will create an all-new peak of fun for you duelist who never fully understood the rules.
